President Samuelson's Last Lecture!

Golden Key hosts a Last Lecture Series where we invite noted individuals or distinguished professors and ask them one question:

"If you were to die the next day, what would you say in

your last lecture?"

We've had fascinating speakers such as Professors Valerie Hudson and John Bell and John Bytheway.

This month, we've invited (drumroll please) . . .

President Cecil Samuelson, President of BYU!

Room Change for Friendship Bracelet Activity!

Come join us and make some friendship bracelets for girls in juvenile detention centers as a means of support and encouragement! When these girls participate in their support groups and make progress, they are awarded currency points, which they can redeem for awards like these friendship bracelets at their "store".

Despite what it seems, these bracelets are super easy to make. Drop by anytime from 6-8 p.m. and stay for as long as you can - you don't have to feel pressured to finish one!

Our Chapter's Vision: GK as a Vehicle for Service

Besides celebrating your academic achievement, Golden Key - BYU Chapter wants to channel your energies and talents into worthwhile causes that serve the needs of our campus and our community. Together, as hundreds of highly-motivated students, armed with the Golden Key resources, we can be change makers. Our contributions may be small. But they will touch somebody's life. And that's really all that we can ask for right?


Here are two opportunities this month for you to start to get involved:


Friendship Bracelet Service Activity

We are making friendship bracelets for youth in juvenile detention centers as rewards for their participation in their support groups. 

Never made one before? Don't worry, it's quick and easy and we have step-by-step diagrams for you to follow. Take a break from your busy schedule and make a gift of love and support!

When: November 11 Thursday, 6- 8 p.m. (Drop by anytime!)

Get Out the Vote for Tipping Bucket

The Tipping Bucket launches one specific "Change the World" project at a time, in one of seven impact sectors—Community, Education, Energy, Environment, Health, Justice, Opportunity.  Working alongside their partners, they use social media to guide micro-donors to their website, where donors like us can pledge as little as $1 (the default amount) to help that project get off the ground.

During November, Pepsi is sponsoring a contest in which organizations compete for a chance to win a $250,000 grant for their organization. The Tipping Bucket is asking for your support!  If they win, the grant money will be used in support of dozens of global development projects around the world.  You can vote up to three times a day via text, facebook, or pepsi’s website. If you would like to get an e-mail reminder to vote each day during the month of November, send your name and email address to pepsi@tippingbucket.org.

Member Highlight: Jennifer King, former president of BYU-GK Chapter

Being a member of Golden Key has given me both resources and skills that have helped me with my job search and continued professional development. The networking tools and personal development lectures on the website give lots of helpful hints on how to get your name out and make your job hunt more effective. Additionally, there is a huge GK group on LinkedIn that allows you to connect to other GK alumni working throughout the world. This group also regularly posts interesting articles on career development that have helped me immensely as I have organized and conducted my own job search. 

All of these resources are great, but I think the aspect of my GK membership that has most helped me is my participation in the chapter leadership, first as PR Chair and then as President. I gained skills in leadership, time and resource management, marketing, public speaking, and professional etiquette. I also learned how to get outside of myself and how to have fun while still getting the work done. All of these abilities have helped me immensely as I have searched and interviewed for jobs and worked to build up my own tutoring business. I strongly urge everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to join Golden Key and especially to get involved with the leadership.  Being a part of Golden Key was one of the best experiences of my college career and continues to influence my life on a daily basis.

Golden Key CEO Visits BYU campus

The CEO of Golden Key International Honour Society, John Mitchell, visited BYU campus during August to meet with various campus dignitaries, such as John Bell, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and President Samuelson. A few of the Golden Key BYU Chapter officers were able to accompany John to a few of the meetings. 

John informed us there will be $600,000 in scholarships awarded (not just "available") this year, and that the Society's funds are being mostly (88%) spent on programs and the members rather than payroll and such.

When Dr. John Bell asked John to describe in ten minutes the purpose of our society at BYU, he brought up the following main points:
1. Stating our mission (helping students realize their potential through academics, leadership, and service)
2. Talking about scholarships
3. Contributing to the University and the Provo community in general.
 
John also stresses that Golden Key represents a lot of opportunities for service because we have so many members and there is a lot of money allotted for scholarships - a large amount that has yet to be tapped into. His motto? "Let's use our members and let's use those funds."

Congratulations to our chapter scholarship winners - Abby Blaisdell and Jeff Swindle!

Over the summer, Golden Key BYU chapter awarded two $1000 scholarship to Abby Blaisdell and Jeff Swindle for their outstanding service project ideas. They are currently working with Golden Key officers and other third party organizations, such as Teach For America, to put their plans into action.

Kaplan Free Practice Test Event - September 25th  

Planning for graduate school and want more practice for the upcoming pre-graduate tests?

On Saturday, September 25th, Kaplan is holding a FREE opportunity for students to take a practice GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, or PCAT.  The event will be held on BYU campus, in the Tanner Building.  It is open to anyone who would like to take a practice test, even if you are not a current BYU student.

Each test will last up to 3 hours and will be proctored like an actual exam. After the test, a Kaplan instructor will give a short workshop on test-taking strategies and answer questions.

This is a great opportunity for students to see how they might score on the real thing, and also to get an idea of the kinds of questions that will be on the real test. The tests will be scored and returned to the students later that afternoon with computerized feedback about their individual performance on the test.
